Why Do We Forget? Using Sea Slugs to Understand Memory and Memory Loss

Drs. Irina Calin-Jageman and Robert Calin-Jageman research Aplysia californica (i.e., sea slugs) to help determine why neural connections are lost and, in some cases, regained. In their lab at Dominican Drs. Calin-Jageman explore the mechanisms underlying ‘forgetting” and how research may have implications not only for the treatment of memory disorders but also for technologies to enhance learning and/or the persistence of memory.

Redesigning Fashion: How the Pandemic Changed Fashion Week

José Blanco F. will share insights on how, in just a few months, COVID-19 upended the fashion show industry. From Paris to Milan and New York, Fashion Weeks taking place during the spring and summer were radically altered, yet moments of creativity and transcendent beauty emerged. José will discuss both the industry and how he and his colleagues are working with students to transform fashion, and the stage, into a digital format.

Restorative Justice in Our Society

In this presentation Jake Bucher will talk about his teaching of the Introduction to Sociology, Juvenile Justice, and Criminal Justice course that he delivers in the Inside-Out mode at Cook County Jail. Jake will feature the growing social movement of restorative justice. Accompanied by students who participated in the class, he will discuss how it aims to strengthen peaceful approaches to harm, problem-solving, and violations of legal and human rights. He will tie this into the Dominican tradition to encourage students to develop the personal drive to succeed in a lifetime of meaningful work.
